Building the Great Wall of Love Against COVID-19
Many diverse communities are uniting to help each other to build the Great Wall of Brotherhood. The Canadian Chinese community collaborates with other communities to guard the entrances to Canada as our first line of defense and to guard our communities as the second line.
Live and Online Press Conference Invitation
Dear Madam/Sir:
This press conference is aiming to call on united actions from all communities to fight against COVID-19. It is hosted by the Confederation of Toronto Chinese Canadian Organizations, co-hosted by Canada Volunteers United Association. The Honourable Victor Oh Senator has confirmed his presence. We will invite other representatives from municipalities, provincial and Federal governments, volunteers from different provinces in Canada, community leaders and media representatives to cover this press conference (estimated 500 people). If you would like to attend the press conference as government officials. Please contact CCIB News at [email protected]
This press conference has invited officials from MOHLT to let the public know what they have prepared for preventing the community spread of the virus. The volunteers from different provinces in Canada will share their experiences about supporting those who choose to start voluntary self-isolation.
Since the outbreak in January of the COVID-19 epidemic, Chinese-Canadians have been monitoring the situation closely. For the safety of the Canadian public, Canadian Chinese volunteers have been helping to contain the virus by assisting their neighbours who want to start self-isolation after coming back from China. Volunteers have provided no-touch airport pick up, self-isolation brochures, psychological counselling, media coverage and more.
Since the pandemic’s breakout, more than a hundred countries have now confirmed COVID-19 within their borders; among them are South Korea, Italy, Iran, France, Germany, Spain, US, Japan — as well as Canada. At this challenging time Canada has maintained its benevolence and upheld the selfless legacy of Normal Bethune that is so well remembered in China. The federal government has not only acted decisively in offering aid to China in its fight against the outbreak but has also kept our borders open to travellers from countries impacted by COVID-19 when others have closed their doors to them. All Canadians of Chinese descent applaud these policies. Unfortunately, some huge risks are still imminent. There have already been over 100 COVID-19 cases brought into Canada from other countries. More ominously, there are now cases of community transmission here for which the patient’s point of exposure to the virus is unknown.
The federal government has taken a series of actions which include creating a Cabinet committee on COVID-19, investing $27 million to fund coronavirus research and releasing $1 billion to battle coronavirus. PHAC has advised Canadians to prepare themselves by following proper individual hygiene and by stocking up on essentials. In addition, PHAC has advised that the risk for COVID-19 may be increased for certain settings such as cruise ships and large gatherings in enclosed spaces. Furthermore, the federal government will boost funding for a workshare program to help in situations where businesses have reduced their employees’ work hours.
At this critical time, all communities should unite to fight the coronavirus. This is a struggle in which all of us must play our part.
In regard to airports and border crossings people coming to Canada. we make the following urgent requests: that all persons voluntarily choose to remain in self-isolation for 14 days. Their self sacrifice for the public safety will be highly appreciated. All communities can take actions together to guard the first line of defense at entry points to Canada.
We request that large scale events involving more than 50 persons be postponed or cancelled in every community. We further request that personal hygiene practices and measures to prevent the virus from spreading be even more actively promoted. These actions will help minimize the risks to public health, the economy and our daily lives. We hope all communities will unite to help each other as neighbours and to protect our country.
